Mental Clarity: What It Is and How to Sustain It

If you are keen to look after your own wellbeing and in particular your mental health, there is something that you are going to want to focus on especially, and that is mental clarity. The thing about the mind is that it can easily become clouded as a result of various forces, and when that happens it can stop you from being able to properly focus on whatever you need to focus on. In order to help work against that, it helps to have a decent understanding of mental clarity: what it is, but especially what you can do to improve it and sustain it.

What Is Mental Clarity?

It is probably best to define mental clarity with regard to its lack. You probably know all too well the feeling of lacking mental clarity – if you have ever had that experience of what many people would call brain fog, then you know what we’re talking about here. Mental clarity is when you are able to focus well and easily, and your thoughts are not all jumbled and all over the place.

With good mental clarity, your thoughts can flit easily from one thing to the next, but without moving at an overwhelming speed either. In its most perfect form, it is like that flow state where you are just concentrating and relaxed at the same time, and everything seems to be working as it should.

It is clearly desirable to have mental clarity in our lives – but why? Just to make sure we know why you might want to aim for it, let’s take a look at some of the major benefits of having strong mental clarity in your daily life.

The Benefits Of Mental Clarity

When you have a good degree of mental clarity in general, you will find that you are able to concentrate more easily on the things that you turn your attention to. You will find it easier to think deeply and widely, and to solve whatever problems are in front of you. That makes every aspect of your life easier, from work to relationships and any creative endeavours you might have going on.

Good mental clarity also enables you to feel energised, and very often these two things go hand in hand and bounce off each other quite nicely. So the more clear of mind you are, the better you will feel in yourself in general. You will not only be more productive, you will also find it easier to regulate your emotions – an important tool for anyone. All in all, you will probably find that you are a lot happier in yourself when you have a good amount of mental clarity that is being well-sustained throughout your life.

What Causes Brain Fog?

So it might be helpful to look at what causes the opposite of mental clarity, as in understanding that we can work out what we might need to do in order to have more mental clarity in our lives. If you find that you often have brain fog, you will probably agree that it is quite an unenjoyable experience to have, and one that you would probably want to do away with as best as you can. So what are the main causes of brain fog for people today?

One of the major culprits is the internet. That is not to say that you need to stop using the web altogether if you are going to get rid of brain fog. It’s a certain type of internet usage which is really damaging for the mind, and it’s that endless scrolling that you can get into when you are looking at social media. If you know that you are a heavy social media user, it might be time to start thinking about reducing your usage, or even cutting it out altogether.

The less social media you use, the less brain fog you will have. This is also true of television in general, so if you happen to watch many hours of television every day you might benefit from reducing those hours too. Something like reading a book or gardening is going to engage your mind much more, and you will find that you feel a lot better for it, with much greater mental clarity on the whole.

Then there is the brain fog which comes from just being depressed, and this is altogether a more difficult and serious issue to contend with. If you have long-term depression then you might want to seek out some help, or continue with whatever help you might currently be receiving already. Sometimes it is not depression but anxiety which is the cause of brain fog, and that too might require therapy and/or medication to help ease it a little.

Those are just some of the major causes of brain fog. There are other causes too that we don’t have time to go into right now, such as addictions and insomnia. But whatever the cause of your own brain fog, you will mostly want to know what you can do about it, and how you can keep it at bay in the future.

Finding Your Mental Clarity

If you would like to find more mental clarity in your life, there are many things you can do. One of the main causes of brain fog that we haven’t discussed yet is adrenal fatigue, which can affect anyone when they are overworking themselves, drinking too much coffee or alcohol, and generally being run-down. There are herbs for adrenal fatigue which you might want to consider making use of, or you might also want to look at your diet and see whether you could cut down on processed foods and the like.

Beyond that, there are a number of other positive steps you can take to improve your mental clarity to no end, and these are great because they are always going to help, no matter what position you might be starting out from. For instance, if you don’t already, you might want to think about taking up a meditation practice. The simple act of focusing on the breath for twenty minutes a day can work wonders for your mental clarity, so it is something you might want to think about.

It is also worth ensuring that you are getting enough sleep. If you think you might do with getting more sleep, consider whether you have a good bedtime routine right now, and if not then start that immediately. If there are psychological barriers to good sleep for you, you might need to work through those with a therapist too. However you do it, there is no doubt that getting more sleep is going to be one of the most helpful things you can do to improve your sense of mental clarity.

Be Patient

Finally, a word on patience. You might find that it takes some time to get really mentally clear, and that is perfectly normal. If you are getting frustrated, it’s probably wise to try and be a little patient, as you might just have to wait a while for the effects to kick in as you would want them to. Soon enough, you will be much more clear of mind, and you will enjoy the many benefits that come with that.
